About Us

Our Students Come First!  2012-13

Ozaukee Elementary serves 360 students in grades PreK-grade 5. We offer a full-day 5-year-old kindergarten, a half-day 4-year-old kindergarten, and an early childhood program for preschoolers with special needs. We provide many support services, including RtI reading and math, guidance groups, and a full range of special education. Certified teachers teach art, music, physical education, and library media. Smaller class sizes allow teachers to know their students' learning styles and interests. They are able to tailor instruction to meet student needs.

The staff members at Ozaukee Elementary strive to provide a balance of academic rigor and a nurturing environment in which children are provided opportunities to excel while preparing them to become responsible citizens.

A strong emphasis is placed on reading, writing, and mathematics. Balanced literacy is used to teach students how to read and write. Small-group reading instruction is provided using instructional materials that are matched with a student's reading ability. Students move through leveled materials at their personal pace as they acquire reading skills and fluency. Writing is taught through the writer’s workshop process and Six-Trait Writing. Word study (spelling, phonics, decoding) is also addressed. Mathematics instruction includes a blend of computational and application skills.

This year we will be concentrating on Common Core State Standards. These standards have been developed as national standards. The State of Wisconsin, as the majority of other states, adopted the Common Core as its state curriculum in language arts and mathematics in 2010.  Each grade level has a specific set of standards or learning objectives students are expected to meet.  The explicit sets are meant to be consistent from school to school and state to state.  The Common Core expectations are rigorous and demand focus on key academic skills.  For more information on The Common Core Standards and parent guides see http://www.pta.org/4446.htm.

Student progress in grades 5K-multi-age is reported through a standards-based report card. Grade-level teams designed grading rubrics that align with the Common Core standards. Student skill levels are rated as Advanced, Proficient, Basic, or Minimal. These ratings reflect what students can do at the end of each semester. Student effort is marked separately under each subject area. We believe parents are more informed of their child’s individual progress and how they compare to established grade-level expectations using this reporting format.  Parents will also receive a mid-semester report in November and March noting student progress in language arts, mathematics and behavior.

The Power Period will continue this year.  Forty minutes per day are set aside to reinforce basic skills through our Response to Intervention Model.  Three days per week the focus is on language arts skills and two days per week it is on math skills.  Students are assigned to instructional groups depending on their individual levels.

We host a multi-age program for students in grades 4 & 5 instructed by a team of four teachers.  In language arts and mathematics students are assigned to a teacher based upon individual instructional levels.  Reading, writing, and mathematics instruction is based upon a continuous improvement model and directly tied to grade-level Common Core standards.  Science, social studies and RtI interventions are presented to students by grade level placement.

Technology is extremely accessible to our elementary students.  Our wireless environment allows students to work on web based programs such as Reading Eggs, Study Island and Type to Learn 4 from school and home.  In addition to a 26 station computer lab, 30 portable netbooks, and 25 iPads, students have access to workstations and SmartBoards in every classroom.
